Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was a pivotal political leader of the 20th century. He served as the final leader of the Soviet Union from 1985 until its dissolution in 1991.

Gorbachev held the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party starting in 1985. He also became the head of state in 1988. His leadership marked a period of massive transition for the Soviet state. He began his career following the ideology of Marxism–Leninism. However, he eventually moved toward social democracy by the early 1990s.

Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931, in Privolnoye. This village was located in the North Caucasus Krai of the Soviet Union.

His family were peasants of Russian and Ukrainian heritage. His parents, Sergey and Maria, lived in a very poor household. During his childhood, the Soviet Union was a one-party state under Joseph Stalin. This era included difficult times like the famine of 1930–1933. It also included the Great Purge, where many people were arrested or executed. Gorbachev's own grandfathers had served time in labor camps during this period.

As a young man, Gorbachev worked hard on a collective farm. A collective farm, or kolkhoz, is a large farm owned by the community.

He spent five summers operating combine harvesters with his father. In 1948, they harvested a massive amount of grain. For this work, Gorbachev received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. He later attended Moscow State University to study law.

He graduated with distinction in June 1955. During his university years, he met Raisa Titarenko, who became his wife.

Gorbachev rose through the ranks of the Communist Party in Stavropol. He oversaw the construction of the Great Stavropol Canal.

In 1978, he moved back to Moscow to join the party's Central Committee. By 1980, he became a voting member of the Politburo. The Politburo was the group of high-ranking leaders who ran the Soviet Union. After several brief leaders passed away in 1985, the Politburo elected Gorbachev as General Secretary. He believed the Soviet system needed deep changes to survive.

To fix the country, Gorbachev introduced several major policies. The first was glasnost, which means "openness." This policy allowed for more freedom of speech and a freer press.

The second was demokratizatsiya, or democratization. This allowed for the creation of the elected Congress of People's Deputies. The third was perestroika, which means "restructuring." This policy aimed to decentralize economic decisions to make the country more efficient. These changes were intended to modernize the Soviet Union but also changed its power structure.

Gorbachev also worked to change international relations. He wanted to end the Cold War, a long period of tension between superpowers.

He held many summits with United States President Ronald Reagan. These meetings helped the two nations agree to limit nuclear weapons. He also decided not to use the military to stop changes in Eastern Europe in 1989. This allowed many Warsaw Pact countries to move away from Marxist–Leninist rule. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for these efforts toward global peace.

Despite his efforts, the Soviet Union eventually collapsed. Nationalist feelings grew strong in many different republics. In August 1991, hardliners in the party tried to launch a coup against him. The coup failed, but the Soviet Union dissolved shortly after.

This dissolution happened against Gorbachev's own wishes. He became a critic of later Russian leaders like Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin. Today, people view him in different ways. Some praise him for ending the Cold War and bringing freedom. Others argue his reforms caused Russia to lose global influence and suffer economic collapse.
