George Gershwin was a great American music maker.

He was a talented piano player. He also wrote songs for many different stages. He could write jazz, pop, and classical music. He was famous for mixing these styles together. This made his music sound new and special.

One of his most famous works is Rhapsody in Blue. This piece uses both a piano and an orchestra. He also wrote a famous opera called Porgy and Bess. Even though it did not sell well at first, people now call it a classic. He worked closely with his brother, Ira. Together, they wrote shows for Broadway. Their show, Of Thee I Sing, won a Pulitzer Prize. This is a big award for drama.

George also moved to Hollywood to write music for films. He wrote the music for the movie Shall We Dance. Later in his life, George became very ill. He died from a brain tumor when he was only 38. His songs are still played by many people today.
