George Gershwin was a prolific American composer and pianist. His musical works were unique because they spanned several different genres. He wrote jazz, popular music, and classical music. This ability to blend styles helped define a new American sound.

His compositions have become jazz standards, which are songs that musicians frequently perform. Many of his melodies have also been adapted for film and television.

Gershwin's musical process involved a mix of formal study and practical experience. He began his career as a "song plugger" on New York City's Tin Pan Alley. In this role, he earned $15 a week at age 15. He worked for the Jerome H. Remick and Company publishing firm. He also recorded piano rolls for companies like the Aeolian Company. He even used pseudonyms, or fake names, like Fred Murtha to release music. This early work gave him a deep understanding of how music reached the public.

His musical career can be divided into several distinct stages. He started with popular songs and Broadway theater works. He often collaborated with his brother, the lyricist Ira Gershwin. Together, they created many musical comedies. Later, he moved into large-scale orchestral compositions. He also explored the world of opera. His work in Hollywood during his final years focused on film scores. Each stage showed his growing skill in different musical environments.

Gershwin's family history is rooted in the Russian Empire. His parents were Jewish immigrants who moved to the United States. His father, Morris Gershovitz, arrived in America on August 14, 1890. His mother, Roza Bruskina, moved from the Russian Empire to New York to escape anti-Jewish sentiment. George was born on September 26, 1898, in a Brooklyn apartment. He was originally named Jacob Gershwine. He changed the spelling of his surname to Gershwin as he became a professional musician.

The significance of Gershwin's work is seen in his many awards and hits. In 1919, his song "Swanee" became a massive national success. In 1924, he composed Rhapsody in Blue for orchestra and piano. This piece is famous for blending jazz and classical elements. In 1931, his musical Of Thee I Sing won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This was the first musical to ever receive that honor.

His opera Porgy and Bess, released in 1935, eventually became an American cultural classic.

Several notable moments highlight his unique place in music history. In the mid-1920s, Gershwin traveled to Paris to study composition. He sought out the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger. However, she refused to teach him. She feared that rigorous classical training would ruin his jazz-influenced style. The composer Maurice Ravel also expressed similar objections. Despite this, Gershwin wrote the famous tone poem An American in Paris while in France.

Gershwin's life connected many different artistic fields. He worked in the Yiddish Theater District as a young man. He collaborated with Broadway stars like Al Jolson. He also worked with film stars like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. He even befriended the famous composer Arnold Schoenberg. His ability to move between the concert hall, the Broadway stage, and the movie studio shows his versatility.

He died in 1937 at the age of 38 from a brain tumor. His legacy continues through the many musicians who still play his music today.
