George Gershwin was a famous American composer and piano player.

He was special because he mixed different kinds of music together. He could write jazz, popular songs, and classical music. This helped create a new sound that people loved. His music was used in many places, like theaters and movies. Even today, many of his songs are called jazz standards. These are songs that musicians play all the time.

George started his music journey in a very hands-on way. When he was fifteen, he worked as a song plugger. This meant he helped people hear new songs in New York City. He earned fifteen dollars a week at first. Later, he worked with piano rolls to record music. He also played the piano for singers in vaudeville shows. He learned how to write songs by working with others. This helped him grow from a worker into a great artist.

His family history is full of big changes and moves. His parents were Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire. His father, Morris, moved to America to find a better life. They lived in a house in Brooklyn, New York. George was born there on September 26, 1898. His birth name was actually Jacob Gershwine. He became interested in music when he was ten years old. This happened after he heard a friend play the violin.
