She loved stories from a young age. She studied at Harvard University. There, she learned how to write for the stage.

In 1922, she met DuBose Heyward. They married in 1923. They worked together on a play called Porgy. This play was based on a book DuBose wrote. Dorothy saw that the story would work well as a play. She helped him turn it into a stage show.

The play was a big success. It ran for 367 shows. The pair chose to use only Black actors for the play. This was a very important choice. At that time, white actors often played Black roles in a way that was not respectful.

Later, the play became a famous opera. It is called Porgy and Bess. George Gershwin wrote the music for it. This opera is very well known today. Dorothy also wrote many other plays. Some of her works focused on African-American culture. She wrote about hard topics like slavery and prejudice. She even wrote a children's opera about Babar the elephant.
