DuBose Heyward was a famous American writer. He was born in 1885 in Charleston, South Carolina. As a young man, he was often sick. He dealt with polio and typhoid fever. While he stayed in bed, he wrote many stories and poems. This helped him find his path as a writer.

Heyward is best known for his book called Porgy. It was published in 1925. He and his wife, Dorothy, turned it into a play. Later, a composer named George Gershwin helped turn it into a grand opera. We call this opera Porgy and Bess. It came out in 1935. Many people think the songs in the opera are some of the best ever written. The opera became a masterpiece that people still love today.

Heyward also wrote for children. He made a popular book called The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes. He wrote many other books and plays too. He even wrote a screenplay, which is a script for a movie. Heyward died in 1940 at the age of 54. He left behind a large world of stories for us to read.
