Carson McCullers was a famous American writer. She wrote novels, short stories, and plays. Many of her stories took place in the Deep South. Her writing style is often called Southern Gothic. This means her stories show lonely people in small towns. She also wrote about people who felt like outsiders.

She began writing when she was young. Her father gave her a typewriter at age fifteen. Her first big novel was The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. It was published in 1940. Another famous work was The Member of the Wedding. This was a play about a girl at her brother's wedding. It was a big hit on Broadway.

Many people turned her books into movies. She had many friends who were also famous artists. Carson faced many health problems in her life. She had heart disease and suffered from strokes.
