His song "Maple Leaf Rag" became a very big hit. It helped make ragtime popular all over the country.

Joplin grew up in a musical family. His mother played the banjo. His father played the violin. A teacher named Julius Weiss taught him for free. Weiss helped Joplin see music as a fine art. Joplin even sent money to his old teacher later in life.

Joplin traveled to many cities to play music. He went to a big fair in Chicago in 1893. This event helped spread ragtime to many people. He also lived in Missouri and taught piano to students.
