Peter Sculthorpe was a famous Australian music maker. He was born in Tasmania in 1929. He started writing music when he was seven. He loved the piano very much. He even wrote music in secret as a boy!

Sculthorpe wanted his music to make people feel better. He did not like music that was too hard to follow. Instead, he used sounds from the Australian bush. His music can feel like the wild outback. He used many percussion instruments to make these sounds. He also used the didgeridoo, a long wooden instrument.

He was very interested in local cultures. He used ideas from Aboriginal Australian music in his songs. He also liked music from nearby Asian countries. His work helped create a special sound for Australia.

He was a teacher at the University of Sydney. He also taught at Yale University in America. People call him an icon in Australia. He won many big awards for his skill. A new award now helps young music makers. This is called the Peter Sculthorpe Fellowship. It helps them make new music for Australia.
