Some people call it "frogurt" or "froyo." It is a frozen treat made with yogurt. It also uses other dairy or non-dairy products. This dessert is often more tart than ice cream. That tangy taste comes from lactic acid in the yogurt. It usually has less fat than ice cream because it uses milk instead of cream.

Making this treat involves many careful steps. First, makers combine milk products and stabilizers. They add yogurt culture, which includes Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. This mixture stays at a certain temperature until it sets. Then, the mix cools down to a specific temperature. It might sit in aging tanks for up to four hours. Makers then add sweeteners, flavorings, and colors. The mix is cooled again between -6 and -12 degrees Celsius. Finally, air is mixed in to make it smooth. Fast freezing prevents large ice crystals from forming.

This dessert has a very interesting history. People invented frozen yogurt in New England during the 1970s. Since then, different companies have changed how we eat it. The Pinkberry chain is known for letting people customize their treats. They allow customers to choose many different toppings. Another chain called 16 Handles introduced something new too. They brought in self-service machines with many choices. These machines let people pick exactly what they want.

There are many specific ingredients in the mix. Sugar from beets or cane makes up 15 to 17 percent. Milk solids provide proteins and sweetness, making up 8 to 14 percent. The fat in the yogurt is usually between 0.55 and 6 percent. Makers use additives like guar gum or carrageenan to keep it stable. These help the yogurt stay smooth and resist melting. Some shops sell the mix as a liquid. Other shops sell it as a powder that needs water. You can even choose between high-fat or low-fat mixes.

Eating frozen yogurt is a fun experience.
