He was born in a place called Prussia. As a young man, he served in the army. He also traveled to Greece to help in a war. During his travels, he saw many things that were very sad. He wrote about these things in books.

Lieber moved to the United States in 1827. He worked many different jobs. He taught swimming and gymnastics. He also worked as a writer and a translator. Later, he became a professor. He taught history and law at colleges in South Carolina and New York.

During the American Civil War, Lieber did important work. The U.S. Army asked him to write rules for soldiers. These rules are called the Lieber Code. They told soldiers how to act fairly during a war. This was the first modern set of laws for the battlefield. His ideas helped shape later laws like the Geneva Conventions. These rules help make sure people are treated better during wars. Lieber died in 1872, but his ideas still help the world today.
