Boucher had a very busy way of working. He often started by making big plans for his paintings. He would make chalk studies of single people or groups. He also used oil and gouache sketches to prepare for big jobs.

Later in his life, he liked using brown chalk. He was also a gifted engraver who used copper plates. He even made small prints in red ink for people's homes. These small pictures could fit in tiny spaces on walls.

His life began in Paris as the son of a painter.

His father, Nicolas Boucher, gave him his first lessons. At age seventeen, a famous painter named François Lemoyne admired his work. Lemoyne made Boucher his apprentice for three months. Later, Boucher won a big prize called the Grand Prix de Rome in 1720. He eventually studied in Italy before joining the Academy in 1731. He married Marie-Jeanne Buzeau in 1733 and had three children.

Boucher's career grew very fast as he got older. He became a professor and a rector at the academy.

He even became the First Painter of the King in 1765. A powerful woman named Madame de Pompadour was a huge fan. She was the mistress of King Louis XV. Her support helped make his portraits very important for her image. He also worked with the Beauvais tapestry workshops for many years. He designed beautiful patterns for large cloth hangings.

Many people recognize his art through different themes. He painted calm scenes of nature and pretty landscapes. He also painted stories from old myths about gods and goddesses.

Sometimes he used his own wife and children as models. He even designed costumes and sets for the theater. His work was used in royal places like the palace at Versailles. He even influenced the way people made porcelain decorations.
