Nicolas Poussin was a famous painter from France. He was a leader in the classical French Baroque style. This style is known for being very orderly and clear. Most of his paintings showed stories about religion or ancient myths. He painted these for a small group of collectors in Italy and France. Poussin preferred using clear lines instead of bright colors. He wanted his art to show logic and structure.

His way of working was very specific. Poussin did not like working in large groups of artists. Many painters back then worked together on one big project. Poussin preferred to work very slowly and all by himself. He spent a lot of time studying anatomy and perspective. These are the rules for how bodies and spaces look real. He also filled many sketchbooks with figures from his own imagination.

Poussin was born near Les Andelys in Normandy. He ran away to Paris when he was eighteen years old. In Paris, he saw amazing art in the royal collections. This made him want to travel to Rome to see more. He finally arrived in Rome in the spring of 1624. He was thirty years old when he started his life there. He studied many famous painters like Raphael to improve his skill.

Life in Rome was not always easy for him. He became very ill with a disease called syphilis. He had to sell some paintings just to survive. Luckily, a chef named Jacques Dughet helped him recover. Poussin married Anne-Marie Dughet, the chef's daughter, in 1630. He later became very successful with important patrons. He painted for people like Cardinal Francesco Barberini and Cassiano dal Pozzo. These leaders helped him receive many famous jobs.

Poussin's art changed as he got older. In his later years, he began to paint more landscapes. A landscape is a painting of nature and the outdoors. His work was a major inspiration for many artists who came later. Famous painters like Jacques-Louis David and Paul Cézanne studied his style. They looked to his sense of order and calm. Even today, people still study how he used lines to tell stories.
