He changed the way people looked at art during his short life. Before him, many paintings felt very heavy and formal. Watteau helped move art toward a style called Rococo. This style felt more natural and light. He is credited with inventing a new type of scene called fêtes galantes. These are paintings that show charming and peaceful outdoor settings. They often feel like a scene from a theater play.

Watteau used many different ways to create his art. He was a very skilled drawer of pictures. He often used a technique called trois crayons, which means using three different colored crayons. He also spent time making copies of other popular paintings. This helped him learn how to use color and movement. Later, he worked as an assistant to a painter named Claude Gillot. He also learned about decorating from a man named Claude Audran III. This training helped him make very elegant drawings.
