His brief career sparked a new interest in color and movement. He helped move art away from the heavy Baroque style. Instead, he helped create the Rococo style. This new style was less formal and more naturalistic. Watteau is credited with inventing a new genre called fêtes galantes. These are charming, idyllic scenes that feel like a theatrical performance.

Watteau developed his skills through many different types of artistic work. He began by making copies of Flemish and Dutch genre paintings. This helped him develop a characteristic sketchlike technique. Later, he worked as an assistant to Claude Gillot. Through Gillot, he became familiar with the commedia dell'arte. This is a form of Italian comedy involving specific characters. He also worked with Claude Audran III, an interior decorator. Audran taught him about decorative art and ornamental design. This training helped Watteau create drawings known for their consummate elegance.

Watteau's life was marked by both artistic growth and physical fragility. He was born in October 1684 in Valenciennes. He was the second of four sons. His father, Jean-Philippe, was a roofer. Watteau moved to Paris in 1702 to pursue his career. He worked in various workshops, including one at Pont Notre-Dame. He eventually lived with the banker Pierre Crozat. Crozat was a patron and friend who owned many masterpieces. Studying these works helped Watteau learn from Venetian masters and Peter Paul Rubens.

His paintings often explored themes of theater and emotion. One of his most famous works is Pierrot, also known as Gilles. It depicts an actor in a white satin costume. The character stands isolated with an enigmatic expression. Another masterpiece is The Pilgrimage to Cythera, also called The Embarkation for Cythera. This painting shows people departing from the island of Cythera. Some believe this symbolizes the brevity of love. He also painted The Shop-sign of Gersaint. He completed this work in only eight days. He worked only in the mornings to keep his fingers warm.

Watteau's career was cut short by illness. He had been sickly since his childhood. In 1720, he traveled to London to see Dr. Richard Mead. He hoped the doctor's medicines and food would help him. However, the damp and smoky air of London did not help. He returned to France and spent his final months on an estate. He died in 1721 at the age of 36. His death was likely caused by tuberculous laryngitis. An abbé noted that Watteau was semi-conscious during his final days. He was seen clutching a brush and painting imaginary pictures in the air.

The legacy of Watteau is found in many different fields. His influence reached into costume, film, poetry, and music. A long, pleated dress is even named the Watteau dress after him. Some experts believe his treatment of landscapes helped start Impressionism. His drawings were also very important. He often used the trois crayons technique. This means using three different colored crayons for a drawing.

Many people collected these drawings, even if they disliked his paintings. His influence spread across Europe, including England and Russia.

Today, many institutions work to preserve his memory. Watteau societies exist in Paris and London. Major museums like the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art hold exhibitions about him. These shows explore his paintings, his drawings, and his connection to theater. His work remains a subject of deep study. Scholars examine how he used art to meditate on illusion. He is remembered as an artist who was loyal to his own vision. His art often carries a sense of wistfulness. It captures the fleeting nature of earthly delights.
