He was a prolific painter, draughtsman, and etcher. While he was born in the Duchy of Lorraine, he spent most of his life in Italy. He is celebrated as one of the earliest significant artists to focus on landscape painting.

His work often transformed simple nature scenes into prestigious history paintings. He achieved this by adding small figures from the Bible or classical mythology. These figures helped turn a view of the land into a story.

To create his famous views, Claude used a specific technical method. He often employed a grid of median and diagonal lines. This grid helped him place elements like trees and buildings with precision.

This system allowed him to balance architecture against empty space. The result was a dynamic and harmonious composition. He was also an innovator regarding light. He introduced the sun and streaming sunlight into his landscapes. Before his work, such bright, natural light was very rare in art.

Claude's artistic output included several distinct types of media. He was a prolific creator of pen drawings and monochrome watercolor wash drawings. These washes were usually brown or grey, though he sometimes used pink.

He also produced over 40 etchings, which are prints made from metal plates. He created these mainly before 1642 as simplified versions of his paintings. Early in his career, he also painted frescoes, which are large paintings made directly on walls. While many of these frescoes are now lost, they helped build his early reputation.

One of his most important projects was the Liber Veritatis. This name means "Book of Truth."

It was a collection of 195 drawings made with pen and wash. Claude created these drawings to record his finished paintings. He often wrote the name of the purchaser on the back of the drawings. This served as a way to catalog his work and protect his legacy. Most of these drawings are now held in the British Museum.

Claude's life began in the small village of Chamagne. He was the third of five sons born to Jean Gellée and Anne Padose. Historians have different accounts of his early years. One biography by Baldinucci says he lived in Freiburg with his brother. His brother was an artist who taught Claude the basics of drawing. Another account by Sandrart suggests Claude was apprenticed to a pastry baker.

Regardless of the details, he eventually moved to Italy to study.

In Italy, Claude worked for several different artists. He was apprenticed to Goffredo Wals around 1620 or 1622. Later, he joined the workshop of Agostino Tassi from roughly 1622 to 1625. Tassi ran a large workshop that specialized in palace frescoes. Claude eventually settled in Rome near the Spanish Steps. He lived in the Via Margutta neighborhood for most of his adult life.

He remained in this area until his death in 1682.

His reputation grew through important commissions from powerful people. In the 1630s, he was the leading landscapist in Italy. He received work from the French ambassador and Philip IV of Spain. A vital commission came from Cardinal Guido Bentivoglio. This led to Claude painting four works for Pope Urban VIII between 1635 and 1638.

As he grew older, his paintings became larger and more carefully painted. However, he produced them at a lower rate than in his youth.

Claude's style was shaped by many artistic traditions. He was influenced by Northern Mannerism and artists like Paul Bril. These artists had introduced small "cabinet pictures" on copper.

He also drew from the Venetian tradition of landscape painting. His work connects the styles of Northern Europe with the classical traditions of Rome. Today, he is remembered as a key figure of the Roman School. His influence can still be seen in how artists capture the beauty of light and nature.
