Guido Reni was a famous Italian painter from the Baroque period.

He was born in Bologna on November 4, 1575. His family was full of musicians. Reni mainly painted religious scenes for churches. He also painted myths about gods and heroes.

His art style was often calm and classical. This means it looked organized and steady. He was a very important leader in the Bolognese School of painters. This group of artists grew from the work of the Carracci family.

Learning to paint was a long and steady process for Reni. He started as an apprentice at only nine years old. He studied in the studio of a teacher named Denis Calvaert. Later, he joined a new academy called the Accademia degli Incamminati. This academy was led by Ludovico Carracci. Reni worked hard to master different ways of painting. He could paint with bright colors or use light and shade.

He even made prints using fine lines and dots. His skill allowed him to paint on large walls using a method called fresco.

Guido Reni lived a very busy and sometimes difficult life. He moved between the cities of Bologna, Rome, and Naples. In Rome, he worked for powerful people like the Borghese family. He was a favorite artist for Pope Paul V.

However, he sometimes had arguments about money. He left Rome once because he felt unpaid for his work. In Naples, he faced hard times with other local painters. Because of rumors of harm, he chose to leave Naples quickly. He eventually returned to his home in Bologna.

Many of Reni's paintings are still famous today. One masterpiece is a fresco called L'Aurora. It shows the god Apollo in a chariot as the dawn brings light.

He also painted a famous version of Saint Sebastian. This painting used expensive blue paint made from lapis lazuli.

Another important work is the Massacre of the Innocents from 1611. This painting was so good it helped inspire later artists. Reni died in Bologna in 1642. He was buried in the Basilica of San Domenico.

Guido Reni left a huge mark on the world of art. He ran two studios in Bologna with nearly 200 students.

His most famous student was Simone Cantarini. Reni's ideas traveled far beyond Italy. Many artists in Spain and France studied his style. Even much later, his work helped shape new ways of painting. His life shows how one person can teach many others. He remains a key figure in the history of Italian art.
