Karl Bryullov was one of the greatest Russian painters in history. He lived during the Romantic period. This was a time when art focused on big emotions.

His work helped change how people saw the world. He moved from painting happy scenes to showing deep feelings. Many artists later followed his unique style. He is still remembered as a master of his craft.

Bryullov used many different ways to make his art. He was a skilled draughtsman, which means he was great at drawing.

He painted large historical scenes and small portraits. In his portraits, he used a special style. He mixed simple shapes with romantic feelings. He also used realism to show a person's inner thoughts. This helped his viewers feel a connection to the people he painted.

His life began in St. Petersburg in 1799.

His father, Pavel, was a woodcarver and engraver. Karl studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1809 to 1821. He did not always follow the classical rules taught there. Instead, he felt drawn to the art of Italy. He moved to Rome to work as a painter. He stayed there for many years until 1835.

His most famous painting is called The Last Day of Pompeii.

He worked on this vast piece from 1830 to 1833. It shows a scene of great drama and intense light. Famous writers like Pushkin and Gogol praised it highly. They compared his skill to great artists like Rubens and Van Dyck. This painting made him a famous star across all of Europe.

Later in life, Karl returned to Russia to teach.

He held a high post at the Imperial Academy of Arts. He worked on the ceiling of St. Isaac's Cathedral. However, his health became poor during this time. He went to Madeira for his health in 1849. He died in 1852 in a village near Rome. He is buried in the Cimitero Acattolico in Italy.
