While other artists focused on perfect lines and clear shapes, Delacroix loved movement and bright colors. He wanted his art to feel alive and full of energy. He often looked for subjects that felt exotic or dramatic. This led him to travel to North Africa to find new things to paint.

His work was deeply personal and showed his own unique way of seeing the world.

To create his art, Delacroix used expressive brushstrokes that showed his hand at work.

He studied how colors work together to change how we see a scene. He did not just paint a picture; he used light and color to create a feeling. Sometimes he made lithographs, which are a type of print made from stone. He used these prints to illustrate famous stories by authors like William Shakespeare and Goethe. His technique was often described as being caught in a perfect moment between a sketch and a finished painting.

Delacroix was born on April 26, 1798, in Charenton-Saint-Maurice, near Paris.

He grew up in a family with many connections to important people. His mother was Victoire Oeben, and his legal father was Charles-François Delacroix. However, a man named Talleyrand, who was a friend of the family, helped protect him. Talleyrand was a very important leader in the French government. Even after Delacroix became an orphan at age 16, these connections helped him in his career.

Throughout his life, Delacroix created many famous and sometimes controversial works. In 1822, he showed "The Barque of Dante" at the Paris Salon.

In 1824, he painted "The Massacre at Chios," which showed people suffering during a war. This painting was very bold and some critics did not like it. Another major work was "Liberty Leading the People," painted in 1830.

Delacroix's ideas changed the way artists thought about painting forever. His focus on color and light helped start the Impressionist movement later on.

His interest in exotic places also inspired the Symbolist artists. He is now considered one of the last "old masters" of painting. Even though people argued about his style for years, his influence is still seen today. He showed that art could be a way to express deep, human passions.
