He often painted stories from the Bible or ancient myths. Many people felt his work brought a mysterious and new feeling to old stories. His paintings of women from these myths became very famous symbols of his style.

Moreau followed a careful path to become a master artist. He began drawing constantly when he was only eight years old. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts to learn traditional painting methods.

In the 1850s, he became close friends with the artist Théodore Chassériau. After Chassériau died in 1856, Moreau traveled to Italy to find new inspiration. He spent many hours in the Sistine Chapel copying the work of great masters.

This study helped him learn how to group many figures together in one painting.

His early life in Paris shaped his many talents. He was born into a cultured family with an architect father and a musician mother.

His father supported his art but insisted he receive a strong classical education. Moreau learned Greek and Latin from his father's large library. He also learned to play the piano and was a talented tenor singer. In 1841, a trip to Italy with his mother inspired him to pursue art as a career. He even filled a 60-page album with drawings during that visit.

Moreau had a very successful and sometimes difficult career. He won a medal at the Paris Salon in 1864 for his painting *Oedipus and the Sphinx*.

He also won a medal in 1869 for his work titled *Prometheus*. However, some critics in the press were very harsh toward him. Because of this, he stopped showing his work at the Salon after 1880. In 1883, he was honored as an Officier de la Légion d'Honneur. Even though he was a famous painter, he often preferred to live a quiet life.

Later in life, Moreau became a very important teacher to others.
