Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix was a leading figure of the French Romantic school of art.

He was a master painter, muralist, and lithographer who changed how artists used color. Delacroix favored emotion and movement over the strict rules of Neoclassicism. While his rivals focused on perfect outlines and clear forms, he sought to capture energy. This approach made him one of the last great "old masters" of painting. His work bridged the gap between traditional styles and the modern movements that followed.

Delacroix developed his style through a deep study of optical effects. He used expressive brushstrokes to create a sense of life and immediacy. Rather than focusing on careful modeling of shapes, he used color to suggest form. He often worked in a way that critics described as being between a sketch and a finished painting. This technique allowed him to capture a supreme moment of vitality. He also worked as a lithographer, a method of printing from stone. He used this skill to illustrate famous literary works by authors like William Shakespeare and Goethe.

His artistic journey was shaped by several different influences and stages. Early in his training, he studied under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin in the neoclassical style. His early works, like *The Virgin of the Harvest* (1819), showed a connection to Raphael. However, his style soon shifted toward the rich, colorful approach of the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens. He was also deeply inspired by the artist Théodore Géricault. Géricault's work helped introduce Romanticism to the French art world. This influence pushed Delacroix toward more dramatic and intense subject matter.

Delacroix was born on April 26, 1798, in Charenton-Saint-Maurice, near Paris.

His family life was complex and involved many influential figures. While Charles-François Delacroix was his legal father, the statesman Talleyrand was a close family friend. Talleyrand provided Delacroix with many anonymous commissions and protection throughout his career. This support continued through the Restoration and the reign of King Louis-Philippe. Even after Delacroix became an orphan at age 16, these connections remained vital. He eventually died on August 13, 1863, leaving behind a massive legacy.

Many of his most famous works dealt with intense or controversial themes. In 1824, he painted *The Massacre at Chios*, which depicted the suffering of Greek civilians. This painting was controversial because it showed a disaster rather than a glorious battle. In 1826, he created *Greece Expiring on the Ruins of Missolonghi* to honor the Greek struggle for independence. Another major work, *The Death of Sardanapalus* (1827–28), combined exotic colors with a tragic, violent scene. Critics sometimes found his depictions of passion and death to be shocking or gruesome.

His most influential masterpiece arrived in 1830 with *Liberty Leading the People*.

This painting shows Parisians marching under the tricolour flag of liberty, equality, and fraternity. It uses a symbolic female figure to represent the spirit of liberty. While it was inspired by the 1830 revolution, it focused on the character of the people. The painting was so powerful that government officials once deemed it too inflammatory. It remains one of his most unforgettable and famous images.

Delacroix's impact on the history of art is profound and lasting. His study of color and expressive brushwork directly shaped the Impressionist movement. Later, his passion for exotic subjects inspired the artists of the Symbolist movement. He was also one of the few old masters to be photographed. His ability to balance passion with a determined, clear expression of that passion defined his career. He proved that art could be a tool for exploring the most intense human experiences.
