It is the brightest star in the Southern Fish constellation. Its name means "the mouth of the fish." This star is part of a triple star system. This means it lives with two other stars. One companion is named TW Piscis Austrini. The other is called LP 876-10.

Fomalhaut is also surrounded by rings of dust. These are called debris disks. One big ring is far from the star. Scientists call it Fomalhaut's Kuiper belt. This ring stays full of dust because rocks hit each other. These big rocks are called planetesimals. These hits happen about 2,000 times every day!

People once thought they saw a planet named Fomalhaut b. They saw it using the Hubble Space Telescope. Now, scientists think it is not a planet. Instead, it is a big cloud of dust. This cloud came from a massive crash between two large rocks. The cloud is moving away from the star.
