Eta Carinae is a very bright star system.

Eta Carinae
Eta Carinae

It is far away in the Carina constellation. This system has at least two stars. These stars move in an orbit. An orbit is a path around another object. They move around each other every 5.54 years.

One star is very unusual. It is a luminous blue variable. This means it is a bright star that changes in brightness. This star might explode as a supernova soon. A supernova is a massive star explosion. The second star is also very hot. It is much bigger than our Sun.

In 1837, the stars had a Great Eruption. They became the second-brightest stars in the sky. During this time, the stars threw out much material. This material formed the Homunculus Nebula. This nebula looks like two orange lobes.

The nebula hides the stars from view. The system is part of the large Carina Nebula. It is a very busy place in space.
