Float glass

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Most windows you see today are made of float glass. This type of glass is special because it is very flat. It also has a very smooth surface on both sides. This makes it much better than older ways of making glass.

Because it is so even, it does not need extra polishing. This saves a lot of time and money during making. It is now the most common way to make glass in the world.

Making float glass is a fascinating thing that happens in stages. First, workers mix sand, soda ash, limestone, and other materials. They put this mix into a huge furnace. The furnace heats the materials to about 1,500 °C. This turns the mix into a hot, liquid glass.

The glass is then cooled slightly to 1,200 °C. This helps the glass stay the same density throughout.

Next, the liquid glass flows into a long bath of molten tin. The tin is a metal that is melted into a liquid. Since the tin is denser than the glass, the glass floats on top. It forms a long, floating ribbon of even thickness.

To keep the tin from reacting with the air, a protective atmosphere of nitrogen and hydrogen is used. The glass moves along the bath as it cools down. When it reaches 600 °C, rollers lift the sheet up.

People have tried to make flat glass for a very long time. In 1848, Henry Bessemer patented a way to make a ribbon of glass. However, that method was expensive because the glass needed polishing. Between 1953 and 1957, Sir Alastair Pilkington and Kenneth Bickerstaff found a better way. They worked at the Pilkington Brothers site in St Helens, UK.

Their successful method is often called the Pilkington process. By 1960, companies began making large profits from this new method.

We use float glass for many things in our daily lives. It is used to make windshields and mirrors for cars. You might also see it in furniture like tables or shelves.

It is also used for windows, doors, and even glass for displays. Some float glass is even made into special types like frosted or soundproof glass. This makes it a very important part of our modern world.
