A film studio is a major company that makes movies.

Today, these companies mostly handle money and distribution. Distribution is the way movies are sent to theaters or screens. Some studios own their own facilities to film in. Other companies just rent space from these facilities instead. Most filmmaking is actually done by smaller production companies. These smaller groups work under the bigger studio name.

Studios work in many different ways to create stories. A typical studio is built on a secure lot. This lot is a compound surrounded by tall walls. These walls keep out fans and paparazzi from interfering. Inside, you will find many large sound stages. A sound stage is a big room used for filming. Most large studios have between 20 and 30 of them.

They also have offices, makeup rooms, and a commissary. A commissary is just a fancy word for a cafeteria.

Movie studios have a very long and interesting history.

In 1893, Thomas Edison built the first US studio. He called his building the Black Maria. It was a structure covered in tarpaper. Edison asked actors to perform for his camera there. Later, Edwin Thanhouser started a studio in New York. His company made 1,086 movies between 1910 and 1917. He sent these films to audiences all around the world. The Babelsberg Studio near Berlin was also very important.

Many studios moved to Los Angeles for specific reasons.

Early electric lights were not strong enough for film. Filmmakers needed natural sunlight to make images clear. They even filmed on building roofs in downtown Los Angeles. Producers also moved to escape patent laws in New York. A patent is a legal right to an invention. Moving to California helped them stay away from company detectives. By the 1920s, the "Big Five" studios ruled the industry. These were RKO, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Warner Bros., and MGM.

Studios continue to change as technology grows new paths.

Many studios are now huge multi-national corporations. They make video games, television, and even theme parks. Some famous places include Bollywood in India and Nollywood in Nigeria. In the past, studios used nitrate film which was very flammable. Because of this, they built tall water towers for fires. These towers became a famous symbol of the movie industry. Today, many studios focus on financing and high-tech effects.
