These drugs help people in many ways. They can cure or prevent a disease. They can also ease the pain of an injury. Some drugs are called branded drugs. These are protected by patents. A patent is a legal rule. It protects a new idea for a set time. Other drugs are called generic drugs. They do not have these patent protections.

Making medicine follows a specific way it works. First, scientists must discover new substances. They might find a compound in a plant. Later, they use chemical synthesis to build new things. This means they combine chemicals to make a new structure. They then test these substances for safety and efficacy. Efficacy means how well the drug works. They must also check if the drug is safe. Many laws and regulations govern this whole process.

This industry began to grow in the mid-1800s. It started with local shops called apothecaries. These shops sold medicines made from plants. One famous discovery happened between 1803 and 1805. An assistant named Friedrich Sertürner extracted morphine from opium. He named it after Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams. By the late 1880s, German dye makers were very important. They learned to make pure chemicals from coal tar. This helped the science of pharmacology grow quickly.

Many famous companies started during this time. Bayer is a large company based in Germany. Pfizer is a major company from the United States. In 1921, Frederick Banting and Charles Best found insulin. This was a huge discovery for diabetes. They worked with Eli Lilly to make it in large amounts.

In 1911, Bayer discovered phenobarbital to treat epilepsy. In 1939, Gerhard Domagk won a Nobel Prize. He helped develop Prontosil to fight infections.

Today, the industry is very large and powerful. The global market was worth about $1.48 trillion in 2022. This shows how much the industry grows every year. However, there are many hard jobs and big problems. Some people cannot afford the price of medicine. There are also many rules to keep people safe. Scientists must work hard to find new ways to help. This industry links to how we stay healthy every day.
