A filling station is a place where people buy fuel for their vehicles.

These sites act as local depots that sell fuel and engine lubricants. They receive their supplies from refineries using large tank trucks. Most stations keep their fuel in big storage tanks underground.

This helps keep the fuel safe and out of the way. Many stations also have convenience stores for snacks, drinks, or groceries. Some places even have air compressors to help inflate car tires.

How does the fuel get from the tank to the car? First, a tanker truck arrives and unloads fuel into the underground tanks. This often happens through gravity using a special opening on the station's edge. Next, the fuel travels through underground pipes to the dispensers.

These dispensers are the machines you see in the forecourt. They pump the liquid into the vehicle's tank. The machine also measures the volume of fuel used. Finally, it calculates exactly how much the driver must pay.

Filling stations have a very interesting history. The first known station was a pharmacy in Wiesloch, Germany.

This happened in 1888 when Bertha Benz refilled an automobile. In the United States, the first station built just for gas opened in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1905. Later, in 1912, a station in Columbus, Ohio, became the first drive-in station. Drivers could pull in through the front door and out the back. Some early stations even offered free window washing to their customers.

Different parts of the world use different names for these places. In North America, people usually say "gas station." In the United Kingdom and other English-speaking areas, it is often called a "petrol station."

In Australia, people might call it a "servo." In India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, you might hear it called a "petrol pump." Even in Japan, people use the term "SS" for service station. These names all describe the same helpful service.

Modern stations are changing as technology moves forward. For a long time, most stations only sold gasoline or diesel. Now, they offer many different types of energy. Some sell compressed natural gas or liquid hydrogen.

In 2003, the first alternative fuel station opened in San Diego, California. Even more recently, a station in Maryland became the first in the country to convert to an electric vehicle charging station. This shows how filling stations continue to grow with our needs.
