A bus garage is a special home for city buses.

People also call these places bus depots, bus bases, or bus barns. These buildings are very important for keeping transport running. Many garages sit on old sites like tram sheds. These were once places where streetcars were kept. Other garages were built where horsebus yards used to be. Some are even built on new land where people did not live before.

Most garages have many parts to help the buses. They have indoor parking and outdoor parking areas. There are fuel storage tanks and places to wash the buses. An engineering section helps workers fix the vehicles. This area might have inspection pits to look under the buses. Some garages even have a brake test lane. There are also offices and break rooms for the staff.

Special drivers called shunters work inside the garage. They perform light duties like moving buses around. These drivers often work during the night shift. They move buses into a logical order for the morning. This means the first buses are parked nearest the exit. This helps them leave the depot quickly. Shunters might also clean the buses or add fuel.

Garages must be built very carefully for different buses. They often have high roofs and large open spaces. This is helpful for storing tall double-decker buses. In London, some garages had to change recently. This happened when double-decker buses were replaced by articulated buses. These longer buses were sometimes too big for the old buildings. Companies had to build new garages or split the buses up.

Some companies use extra spots called outstations. These are outdoor parking locations used for storage. They are placed near the bus routes. This helps reduce dead mileage for the drivers. An outstation does not usually have a repair shop. It is mostly just a place to park. This keeps the buses close to where people need them.
