Compressor

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A compressor is a mechanical device used to increase gas pressure. It works by reducing the volume of a gas. This means the gas is squeezed into a much smaller space.

When gas is squeezed, it pushes harder against its container. This push is what we call pressure. Many compressors use stages to work better. In a staged system, the gas is compressed several times in steps. Often, the second stage is smaller than the first one. This helps the machine handle the gas without losing pressure. Each new stage also makes the gas get hotter.

Compressors work in a way that is very similar to pumps. Both machines increase pressure on a fluid and move it through pipes. However, there is one big difference between them. A compressor focuses on changing the density or volume of a fluid. This works best with gases because they are compressible. Liquids are different because they do not squeeze easily. Because of this, we rarely use compressors for liquids. Instead, we use pumps to move and pressurize liquids.

One common type is the reciprocating compressor. This machine uses pistons that are driven by a crankshaft.

These can be stationary or they can be portable. They can also be driven by electric motors or engines. Small ones use 5 to 30 horsepower for quick jobs. Larger ones are used for big industrial or petroleum jobs. Some can reach very high pressures over 18,000 psi. Another version is the diaphragm compressor. This uses a flexible membrane to move the gas.

Other machines use different shapes to move the gas. A rotary screw compressor uses two spinning helical screws. These screws force the gas into a smaller space.

These are great for continuous work in big buildings. A rotary vane compressor uses a rotor with blades. These blades slide in and out of slots to change the volume.

There are also scroll compressors. These use two spiral-like shapes to trap pockets of gas.

One spiral stays still while the other orbits around it.

Different compressors are used for many different things in our world. Scroll compressors are very common in air conditioning and refrigeration. They are quiet and reliable, so they work well in homes. In the early 1990s, they were even used in Volkswagen engines. Some diaphragm compressors were even used in Phoenix, Arizona. These helped test new ways to fuel cars with hydrogen.

This shows how important these machines are for new technology. From small tools to huge gas wells, compressors help move energy.
