Ferricyanide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ferricyanide is a special type of anion. An anion is a tiny part of a salt. The most common version is potassium ferricyanide. It looks like bright red crystals. Scientists use this material as an oxidant. An oxidant is something that helps cause changes in other things. It is a very important tool in organic chemistry.

This substance has a very specific shape. It has a center part that holds six ligands. These ligands are called cyanide. They stick to the center in an octahedral geometry. This means the shape has eight sides. The whole thing has what is called Oh symmetry. This symmetry describes how its parts are balanced. The iron in the middle is low-spin.

One cool thing is how it moves energy. The iron can be easily reduced. This turns it into a related ion called ferrocyanide. This change is part of a redox couple. A redox couple is a way to move power back and forth. This process is reversible. It does not break the bonds between the iron and the carbon. Because of this, it is a standard in electrochemistry.

Ferricyanides are much safer than some other salts. They are less toxic than potassium cyanide. This is because the bonds are very strong. However, you must still be careful. If it touches mineral acids, it can release a gas. This gas is called hydrogen cyanide. It is a highly toxic gas.

This salt can also make beautiful colors. You can treat it with iron(II) salts. This makes a pigment called Prussian blue. This blue color is very brilliant. It also lasts for a long time. People used this color for traditional blueprints. It is a very useful part of science and art.
