Potassium ferrocyanide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Potassium ferrocyanide is a unique inorganic compound. It often appears as lemon-yellow crystals. These crystals have a special shape called a monoclinic structure. In its solid form, it has a complex polymeric structure. This means many small parts are linked together like a chain. The centers of these chains are iron-based groups. Potassium ions act like bridges to connect these groups. When the salt dissolves in water, these connections break apart.

There are many ways to make this substance. In the past, people used organic materials to make it. They used things like leather scraps, dried blood, or horn. Today, factories use a different way. They start with hydrogen cyanide and iron(II) chloride. They also add calcium hydroxide to the mix. This creates a calcium-potassium salt. Finally, they treat that salt with potassium carbonate. This step gives them the final potassium salt we use today.

A French chemist named Pierre Joseph Macquer first found this salt. He reported his discovery in the year 1752. He tried to break down a blue powder called Prussian blue. He used acids at first, but that did not work. Then, he tried using alkalies. He mixed Prussian blue with a solution of potassium nitrate. To his surprise, the blue color vanished without any heat. He heated the liquid until it simmered. The mixture turned a yellow color with a little red.

This salt has many important jobs in our world. It is used as an anticaking agent. This helps keep road salt and table salt from clumping together. It is also used to help make wine and citric acid. In science labs, it can help find iron. When it reacts with iron(III) chloride, it creates Prussian blue. This deep blue color is used in blueprints. It is also found in famous paintings like "The Starry Night."

Other uses for this salt are quite interesting. It is a part of a high-energy blasting powder. This powder is called Augendre's powder. It is made by mixing the salt with cane sugar and potassium chlorate. It is also used in a special way to make old photographs. This is called the Cyanotype process. In labs, it helps scientists measure other chemicals. It can even be used as a fertilizer to help plants grow.
