Ferricyanide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ferricyanide is a special kind of salt. The most common type is potassium ferricyanide. It looks like red crystals.

In science, it is used as an oxidant. An oxidant helps cause changes in other things. This salt has a center part. Six other parts stick to it. This shape is called octahedral geometry. It looks like a shape with eight sides.

This salt is safer than some other salts. The parts stick together very tightly. This makes it much less toxic. But it can still be dangerous. If it touches mineral acids, it lets out a gas. This gas is called hydrogen cyanide. It is very toxic.

Scientists use this salt in many tests. They use it to study electricity. They call this part a redox couple. This is a way to move power back and forth. This salt also makes a beautiful color. You mix it with iron salts. It makes a dark blue color. This is called Prussian blue. People use it for old blueprints.
