Ferrocyanide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ferrocyanide is a special part of iron. It is an anion. An anion is a part of a molecule with a charge. Many salts of cyanide are very toxic. This means they can be poisonous. But ferrocyanide is less toxic. This is because it does not let out free cyanide.

One common form is potassium ferrocyanide. It is used as an anticaking agent. This helps things like salt stay loose and not clump. It can also help make wine. It helps make citric acid, too.

Ferrocyanide can make a bright blue color. You can make a pigment called Prussian blue. A pigment is a substance used for color. You make it by mixing ferrocyanide with salts that have iron.

Scientists use it in many ways. They use it to study cells. It cannot pass through a cell membrane. This helps them see how cells work. People also study it to make clean energy. They want to use it in flow batteries. A flow battery is a way to store power. It may even help clean wastewater.
