It is part of Spain and sits right next to Portugal. The region is made of two large provinces named Cáceres and Badajoz. Mérida serves as the capital city of this area. However, the largest city in the region is actually Badajoz.

The name might come from the Latin words for the area near the Duero River. It could also mean the outer edges of the kingdoms of León and Castilla.

Nature plays a huge role in how this land looks and feels. Two major rivers, the Tagus and the Guadiana, flow across the region from east to west.

These rivers create different areas of land as they move through the country. In the northeast, you will find the Sistema Central mountain range. The highest point in all of Extremadura is a peak called Calvitero.

It towers over 2,400 meters high. Other mountain groups like Sierra Morena mark the southern edge of the region.

The weather in Extremadura is often very hot and dry. This is known as a Mediterranean climate. Summers are quite hot, which can make finding water a hard job for plants and animals.

Most of the rain falls during the colder months of the year. Because of this, some parts of the land stay very dry. However, the mountains can get much more rain and even snow in the winter. This creates a wide range of environments for living things to enjoy.

Extremadura has a very long and busy history. Long ago, it was part of a Roman province called Lusitania.

The city of Mérida was a very important capital in the Roman Empire. Later, the land was controlled by different groups, including the Umayyads. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the kingdoms of León, Castile, and Portugal all fought for control. By the year 1248, most of the area was under Christian rule. The region also saw many changes during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s.

Today, the region is looking toward the future of energy. Extremadura has a huge amount of extra energy and even has deposits of lithium. This helps the area lead Spain's plans for new, cleaner ways to use power.
