Extremadura is a landlocked autonomous community located in the central-western part of the Iberian Peninsula.

It is the fifth largest of the Spanish autonomous communities by area. The region is divided into two large provinces: Cáceres and Badajoz. Mérida serves as the administrative capital of the community. However, Badajoz is the largest city within the region.

The name itself has two possible origins. One theory suggests it comes from the Latin "Extrema Dorii," referring to areas south of the Duero River. Another theory suggests it combines the word "extreme" with a Spanish suffix for outer regions of León and Castilla.

The geography of Extremadura is defined by its river systems and mountain ranges. Two major rivers, the Tagus and the Guadiana, cross the land from east to west. These rivers divide the territory into three distinct areas. The first area spans from the Sistema Central mountains to the Tagus river. The middle area, called the "Mesopotamia extremeña," sits between the Tagus and the Guadiana. The third area extends from the Guadiana to the Sierra Morena mountains.

Other smaller rivers like the Douro and Guadalquivir drain the edges of the region.

Mountain ranges provide significant elevation and varied environments across the landscape. The highest point in Extremadura is the Calvitero, also known as El Torreón. It is part of the Sistema Central and rises over 2,400 meters high.

Other important ranges include the Sierra de Gata and the Sierra de Béjar. In the middle of the region, the Sierra de las Villuercas rises modestly. The southern border is marked by the Sierra Morena and the Sierra de Tentudía. These mountains create different habitats and water catchment basins for the region.

The climate is primarily a hot-summer Mediterranean type. This means the region experiences very hot and dry summers.

Most precipitation occurs during the colder months. This seasonal pattern leads to high water stress during the summer. The average annual temperature is approximately 15 °C, with an average annual precipitation of 588 mm. However, weather varies greatly by location. The Sistema Central can receive over 1,500 mm of rain, while parts of Badajoz receive only 400 mm. The annual thermal amplitude, or temperature range, usually stays between 16 and 19 °C.

Extremadura has a deep history involving many different empires and cultures. During the Roman Empire, the area was part of the province of Lusitania. Mérida was a major capital and one of the most important cities in the empire.

In the 8th century, the Umayyads conquered the territory. Later, the region became part of the Taifa of Badajoz. Throughout the 11th and 12th centuries, the kingdoms of León, Castile, and Portugal fought for control. By 1248, most of the territory was under Christian rule. The region also faced significant hardship during the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939. In the province of Badajoz, approximately 12,000 executions occurred during this period.

Nature and wildlife are vital components of the modern Extremaduran identity. The region is home to important natural reserves and parks. Monfragüe was designated as a National Park in 2007. The International Tagus River Natural Park is another major protected area. These sites protect the diverse plants and animals that live in the Mediterranean environment. The region's agricultural history is also visible in its landscape and traditions.

This history of land use continues to shape the local economy and culture today.

Today, Extremadura is positioned as a leader in Spain's energy transition. The region possesses an enormous energy surplus. It also contains important lithium deposits, which are used in modern technology. This makes the area central to plans for decarbonisation, which is the process of reducing carbon emissions.

The regional government is currently led by President María Guardiola of the People's Party. Local culture is celebrated annually on the Day of Extremadura, held on 8 September. This date coincides with the Catholic festivity of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
