The region borders Andalusia to the south and Castile La Mancha to the west. It also shares a border with the Valencian Community to the north. The Mediterranean Sea defines its eastern coastline. This area is a single-province community that functions as a distinct political entity. As of 2024, the region holds a population of 1,568,492 people.

About one-third of these residents live in the capital city, Murcia.

Agriculture is a vital mechanism for the region's economy. The warm climate provides a long growing season for many plants. However, the area suffers from low rainfall. To combat this, the region relies on specific water management systems. The Segura River provides a primary source of water for crops. Since the 1970s, the Tagus-Segura Water Transfer has also been used. This major civil-engineering project moves water from the Tagus River into the Segura. This transfer must follow environmental and sustainability restraints. These water sources support massive production of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

Large vineyards also exist in the municipalities of Jumilla, Bullas, and Yecla.

Murcia's history involves many different stages of human habitation. Humans have lived here since the Lower Paleolithic era. Neanderthal remains were discovered at the Sima de las Palomas site. During the Metal Ages, the Argaric culture flourished at the La Bastida site. Later, the Iberians inhabited the territory before the Roman conquest. In 227 BC, Carthaginians settled in what is now Cartagena. The Romans conquered this area in 209 BC and made it part of Hispania Carthaginensis.

They built important sites like the Roman Theatre and various salt factories. Following the Romans, the Vandals, Suebi, and Alans invaded the peninsula. The Visigoths later established a kingdom that eventually became independent from Rome.

The Middle Ages brought significant changes through Moorish rule. In the early 8th century, the Moors began conquering the Iberian Peninsula. They established a period of Muslim rule that included political autonomy. The territory was known as Todmir during this era. The Moors introduced large-scale irrigation, which remains essential for modern agriculture.

Later, the area became a series of independent principalities called taifas. One such taifa was centered on the city of Murcia. Between 1243 and 1266, the Christian conquest took place. Ferdinand III of Castile received the submission of the Moorish king. This led to the emergence of the Kingdom of Murcia under the Crown of Castile.

The political structure of the region has evolved through several eras. The Kingdom of Murcia was a jurisdiction of the Crown of Castile for centuries. In the 19th century, it was replaced by territories belonging to Albacete and Murcia. During the First Republic in 1873, there was an attempt at decentralization. This resulted in the proclamation of the Cantón Murciano. In 1978, a pre-autonomous body called the Regional Council of Murcia was created. Finally, the Statute of Autonomy was approved in 1982. This established the modern Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia. The city of Murcia serves as the capital and seat of government. However, the Regional Assembly of Murcia is located in Cartagena.

Cultural heritage provides deep significance to the region. There are 72 cave art ensembles recognized as part of a World Heritage Site.

The region also holds intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. This includes the drumming processions of Moratalla and Mula. The city of Caravaca de la Cruz is another important site. It is a holy city in the Catholic Church. Every seven years, it celebrates the Perpetual Jubilee at the Santuario de la Vera Cruz. These traditions connect the modern population to their long historical roots.

Today, the region balances industry, tourism, and nature. The coastline features the Mar Menor, a large saltwater lagoon.

This area is a major center for the tourism sector. Industrial activity is also high, particularly in Cartagena. The petrochemical and energy sectors are concentrated in that city. Food production remains a massive part of the regional identity. From ancient Roman villas to modern irrigation projects, the landscape tells a story of continuous adaptation.
