It serves as the prefecture for the department of Hérault. The city is a key part of the Occitania region. It sits on hilly ground near the Mediterranean Sea. The Lez river flows through this landscape. The city is built upon two distinct hills named Montpellier and Montpelliéret. Because of this geography, many streets feature significant changes in altitude. Some of these streets are very narrow and ancient. This creates an intimate atmosphere within the historic center.

The city's name has a unique origin rooted in medieval Latin. It comes from the term "mons pisleri," which means "Woad Mountain." This does not refer to a literal mountain. Instead, it describes a pile of stones. Woad is a plant used to create blue dye locally. In the early Middle Ages, the area was centered around the town of Maguelone. However, pirate raids forced people to move further inland. The Guilhem family eventually founded Montpellier by uniting two hamlets. They built a castle and walls to protect the new settlement. By the 10th century, the town was divided into Montpellier and Montpelliéret.

Montpellier rose to great prominence during the 12th and 13th centuries. It became a vital trading center for the Mediterranean world. The city was a primary hub for the spice trade in the Kingdom of France. During this time, it was the second or third most important city in the country. It had roughly 40,000 inhabitants before the Black Death arrived. The city's political status changed through marriage and diplomacy. In 1204, Peter II of Aragon married Marie of Montpellier. This marriage brought the city into the Crown of Aragon. In 1204, the city also received a charter. This document confirmed traditional freedoms and allowed citizens to choose twelve governing consuls annually. The city remained under the Crown of Aragon until 1349. At that time, James III of Majorca sold it to the French king, Philip VI.

Education has been a central pillar of Montpellier for centuries. The University of Montpellier was established in 1220 by Cardinal Conrad of Urach. This institution is one of the oldest universities in the world. Its medical school is the oldest medical school still in operation today. Many notable figures studied there, including Petrarch, Nostradamus, and François Rabelais. In 1180, William VIII of Montpellier had already granted freedom to all who wished to teach medicine. Today, the university culture remains incredibly strong. Approximately 70,000 students live in the city. This means students make up nearly one-fourth of the total population. This is one of the highest proportions of students in Europe.

The religious history of the city is marked by periods of intense tension. During the 16th-century Reformation, many residents became Protestants, also known as Huguenots. Montpellier became a stronghold for Protestant resistance against the Catholic French crown. The Edict of Nantes included Montpellier among 66 "protected cities" for Huguenots. This period saw the Huguenots take control of the university and political institutions. However, tensions with Paris led to a siege by King Louis XIII in 1622. After two months, the city surrendered. The peace terms required the destruction of city fortifications. King Louis XIII also ordered the construction of the royal Citadel to secure government control.

Montpellier's economy has shifted through various eras of prosperity and hardship. During the 19th century, the city thrived on wine production. The abundant sunshine allowed for successful vineyards. This industry made many citizens very wealthy. However, a fungal disease called phylloxera spread through the vineyards in the 1890s. This disease devastated the local wine culture. In more recent history, the population grew again after Algeria gained independence. Montpellier welcomed many French repatriates from Algeria and northern Africa. In the 21st century, the city has seen massive growth. It has experienced the highest population growth of any French city since the year 2000.
