Most of the land is used for farming. The largest place to live is the city of Hereford, which sits near the middle of the county. Other towns include Leominster, Ledbury, and Ross-on-Wye.

The land in Herefordshire has many different shapes and heights. The middle of the county is mostly low land. This area is crossed by the River Wye and its smaller friend, the River Lugg.

The River Wye is a very important river. It is actually the fourth-longest river in the United Kingdom. In the east, the Malvern Hills rise up along the border. To the west, the ground gets much higher. You can find the Black Mountains there. The highest point in the whole county is Black Mountain, which stands at 812 metres.

People have lived and worked here for a very long time. Herefordshire is one of the 39 historic counties of England. In 1889, a group called the Herefordshire County Council was first created. Later, in 1974, the county was joined with Worcestershire to form a new area. This lasted for many years, but it changed again in 1998. In 1998, Herefordshire became its own unitary authority. This means it has its own council to look after the local area.

Today, the council manages the county just like it did before 1974.

Farming is a huge part of life and work in Herefordshire. The county is very famous for its Hereford cattle. These cows are known for being very hardy and gentle.

Many people use this fruit to make cider. In Hereford, there is a factory called Bulmers that is the largest cider factory in the world. Some farms now use long plastic tunnels to grow strawberries. These tunnels help keep the fruit safe from the rain.

There are many interesting things to see and do in the county. You can visit the historic Market Hall in the town of Ledbury.

The area is also home to many different types of jobs. While many people work on farms, others work in making things like electricity towers or chocolate. The population has grown a little bit recently. In 2011, there were about 183,500 people living here. By 2021, that number grew to about 187,100 people. It is a place where old traditions and new ways of working live side by side.
