The river begins high up in the mountains of mid-eastern Spain. Its source is a place called Fuente García in the Montes Universales. This spot sits at an elevation of 1,593 meters above sea level. The water flows generally toward the west to find the sea. It eventually empties into the Atlantic Ocean at the city of Lisbon.

The river follows a long and winding path through different lands. In Spain, it flows through four communities and six provinces. It passes through places like Teruel, Madrid, and Toledo. For a stretch of 47 km, the river acts as a border. This part is called the "International Tagus" because it separates Spain and Portugal. After this, the river enters Portugal and flows through many regions. It visits districts like Castelo Branco, Santarém, and Lisbon before reaching the ocean.

Many people live near the water in the Tagus basin. This area covers 803,000 square kilometers of land. It is the most populated basin in the Iberian Peninsula. More than ten million people live within this area. This includes the big city area of Madrid and the Lisbon region. The river is also used for many helpful jobs. People use the water for drinking, farming, and making electricity. Some water is even used to cool nuclear power plants.

The river's water levels change with the seasons and the weather. The amount of water is decided by rain and snow. Most big floods happen between January and April. The highest flow usually happens in March when snow starts to melt. The river is lowest between July and October. The smallest flow is often seen in September. Because of this, the river's flow can be very irregular. In Alcántara, the flow can change from 500 cubic meters per second to just 25 cubic meters per second.

Nature and history are both found along the river banks. The Tagus is home to special living things like the Iberian lynx. You might also find the Spanish imperial eagle or the black stork there. Some areas, like Monfragüe National Park, are legally protected.

History is also part of the river. The city of Toledo was built on a high hill near the water. This helped protect the city from attacks long ago. In the past, the mouth of the river helped the Portuguese Empire trade with many lands.
