For 47 km, the river forms a border. This border is between Spain and Portugal. Then the river flows into Portugal. It passes more cities like Lisbon. Finally, it empties into the Atlantic Ocean.

Many people live near the river. Over ten million people live in the Tagus basin. This area includes the city of Madrid.

The river is home to rare animals. You might see an Iberian lynx or a black stork. Some areas are protected nature parks.

The river has a special end. It has an inverted delta. This means it is wide at the start. It gets narrow as it reaches the sea. It forms a large lagoon with shallow sand banks.
