The river starts its journey near Duruelo de la Sierra in the Spanish province of Soria. From there, it flows west through the northern part of the Meseta Central. This area is a large part of the Castile and León region in Spain. Eventually, the river crosses into northern Portugal. It finally reaches the Atlantic Ocean at the city of Porto.

Water moves through the river in many different ways. Some parts of the river are very wide and calm. Other parts flow through narrow canyons.

To help manage the water, people built fifteen dams along the river. These dams do three main jobs. They help control how much water flows. They make hydroelectric power for people to use. They also use locks to help boats move. A lock is a special chamber that lifts or lowers boats. This allows boats to travel through different heights in the river.

People have lived near the Douro for a very long time. In Roman times, people even thought of the river as a god named Durius.

Long ago, people used flat-bottom boats called rabelos to move things. These boats carried barrels of wine down the river. Today, people use large tanker trucks to move wine instead. The river has also been a border between Spain and Portugal for many years. It even helped create a divide between different cultures and languages.

There are many interesting facts about the size and names of the river. The Douro is the third-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula. Its total length is 897 kilometers.

The river basin covers a huge area of about 583,000 square kilometers. Some people think the name might come from a word meaning "golden." Others think it might come from an old Celtic word for water. In the Spanish section, the river flows through five different provinces. These are Soria, Burgos, Valladolid, Zamora, and Salamanca.

The land around the Douro is very useful for farming. The weather and soil are perfect for growing olives and almonds.

Most importantly, people grow many grapes here. These grapes are used to make a special drink called port. Many farms, called quintas, sit on the steep slopes of the river valleys. People also visit the river to see the Côa Valley Paleolithic Art site. This site has very old art that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
