This river is also the fourth largest in the Iberian Peninsula. It is measured by how much water flows through it. The Minho helps people by watering many farms and vineyards. It also helps make electricity through hydroelectric power. This river is a major part of the land in this area.

The river starts in a place called Pedregal de Irimia. This spot is in the northeast of the province of Lugo. The water flows through mountains that get a lot of rain. It moves through the Galician massif and the Cantabrian Mountain range. The river flows through deep canyons for a long time. Then, the valley becomes wide and green near Ourense.

Many smaller rivers flow into the Minho along its path. One of the biggest is the Sil river.

People have lived near this river for a very long time. In the past, the river passed near an old Roman city. The river has many large reservoirs to hold its water. These include Belesar, Peares, Velle, Castrelo, and Frieira. The town of Ribadavia is famous for its special wines. These wines come from grapes grown in the local area. The river helps make the land perfect for these plants.

The Minho does a very special job as a border. It marks the line between Spain and Portugal. It flows south until it reaches the Portuguese border near Melgaço. The river stays as a border for about 135 kilometers. It passes by medieval towns like Melgaço and Monção. These towns have old walls and are national monuments.
