Spies have worked for many years. The oldest known secret report was from a spy in ancient times. This spy worked for King Hammurabi. Long ago, the ancient Egyptians also had a secret service. In the past, spies helped leaders win wars. Some spies joined enemy groups to learn their strength. Others might steal new technology.

In the 1900s, many countries used spies during big wars. During World War I, a famous spy was named Mata Hari. During World War II, many groups worked to find secrets. Some groups were part of the resistance. This means they fought against a ruling power.

Today, spy agencies look for many things. They look for info on drugs or terrorists. They also look for secrets about food and power. Some countries use tools like satellites to find facts. Others use people to find secrets.
