People have written about spies for a very long time. Some say the first spy story is in the Bible. It is in the Book of Joshua.

In the 1800s, spy books began to grow. Writers like James Fenimore Cooper wrote about them. Later, stories about Sherlock Holmes used spy themes. In one story, Holmes acts as a double agent. A double agent is someone who works for two sides.

Many big wars changed these stories. During the First World War, John Buchan became a famous writer. He wrote about a hero named Richard Hannay. After that, new ideas changed the books again. In Manchukuo, stories warned people to watch for spies. These stories often had women as the main heroes.

During the Second World War, writers added more realism. This means the stories felt more like real life. Authors like Eric Ambler wrote about regular people caught in big secrets. Today, spy stories still explore new threats like hackers and global crime.
