Early stories were often about the frontier. James Fenimore Cooper wrote famous tales about the mountains. Later, many books moved west of the Mississippi River.

In the 1860s, cheap books called dime novels became popular. They told stories of settlers, lawmen, and outlaws. Some books were based on real people like Billy the Kid.

In the 1900s, pulp magazines helped these stories reach more people. Famous writers like Zane Grey made the genre very well known.

Western stories were also made into movies and comics. Many people loved watching Westerns on TV in the 1960s. This made the books very popular at that time. Today, fewer people read these books. Most stores only carry a few. However, groups like the Western Writers of America still honor great authors. They give out awards like the Spur Awards to celebrate the craft.
