These stories often take place near the end of the 1800s. They show the spirit and the struggles of a new frontier. You might see cowboys, sheriffs, or bounty hunters. These characters often wear Stetson hats and bandannas. They ride trusty horses through dusty towns and ranches. Many use rifles or revolvers to stay safe.

Westerns grew from Wild West shows in the 1870s. These shows mixed real facts with made-up stories. A famous film called The Great Train Robbery helped set the pattern for these movies. Between 1945 and 1965, Westerns were very popular. This was called the "Golden Age." New tools like color and wide screens let directors show huge landscapes. They could film big mountains and deep canyons. Famous stars like John Wayne became icons during this time. Even today, Westerns are a big part of American culture. They tell stories of the old frontier that people still love to watch.
