People hold prisoners for many reasons. They may want to show they won a fight. They might want to get secrets or use people for work.

In the past, life for prisoners was often very hard.

In ancient Rome, some prisoners became gladiators. These were fighters in large arenas. Many prisoners were also sold as slaves. In some wars, like those of the Aztecs, prisoners were used for sacrifices.

Some people worked to make things better. Long ago, a man named St. Acacius sold gold to help prisoners go home. In the Middle Ages, a nun named Geneviève asked a king to be kind to captives.

Over time, rules began to change. In Europe, wars became more organized. Governments started to take responsibility for prisoners. New treaties helped set rules for how to treat them. One rule said prisoners should go home after a war ends.

Today, international laws help keep prisoners safe.
