Environmental art is a wide range of ways that people make art with nature.

Some artists use the land itself as their material. Others use paint or new tools to show how our world is changing. This type of art matters because it connects us to the earth. It can show us the beauty of a landscape or the problems of climate change. Artists want us to notice the world around us. They use art to start important conversations about our planet.

There are many ways these artists work. Some create huge earthworks that stay in the desert. These works are often too big to move into a museum. Other artists make art that helps the environment. This is sometimes called ecoart, or ecological art. They might work with scientists to fix a polluted area. They might even plant gardens in a city to help people eat healthy food.

Some art even makes things like air pollution visible to everyone.

This way of making art has a long history. It might have started with very old cave paintings of animals. Later, artists like Claude Monet painted the sky and light. Monet believed the atmosphere brought a scene to life.

In the late 1960s, a new movement grew. Artists wanted to leave city galleries and go into the desert. Robert Smithson helped lead this change with an exhibition called "Earthworks" in 1968.

These artists were not just painting nature; they were working inside it.

Many famous works exist in different places. In New York City, Alan Sonfist created a forest called Time Landscape.

This forest shows what the land looked like hundreds of years ago. In 1982, Agnes Denes planted a two-acre wheatfield on a landfill in Manhattan.

This project, called Wheatfield - A Confrontation, turned a pile of trash into a field of food. In San Francisco, Bonnie Sherk created The Farm in 1974. This was a seven-acre garden under a freeway. It helped children learn about nature in the middle of a city.

Today, environmental art links science and art together. Artists work with city planners and architects to help the earth.

They focus on how everything in nature is connected. This includes plants, weather, and even how people live. Groups like ArtTech NatureCulture bring many different people together to work. They use art, design, and technology to find new ways to heal the world.
