African art is a huge and diverse collection of creative works.

It includes many things like sculptures, paintings, and pottery. People also make metalwork and beautiful textiles like Kente cloth. This art comes from many different peoples across the African continent. Each group has its own special way of making things. While styles change from place to place, many pieces share similar themes.

Most African art is not made just to look pretty. Instead, it often has a practical or spiritual purpose. It can be used in religious ceremonies or to teach lessons.

Artists use many different materials to bring their ideas to life.

Because wood is easy to find, many sculptures are made from it. Some people use clay soil to make pottery or terracotta figures. In West Africa, artists developed bronze casting for beautiful reliefs. They made these to decorate palaces or to create royal heads.

Other artists make jewelry from things like beads, shells, or stones. They might even use ebony wood or coconut shells. Some West African people even made small gold weights between 1400 and 1900. These tiny metal sculptures can even represent proverbs to tell a story.

The history of this art goes back a very long time.

Some of the oldest objects are shell beads from 72,000 years ago. People have also used pigments for paint for hundreds of thousands of years. In West Africa, the Nok culture made clay figures between 1500 BC and 500 AD. These figures often have long bodies and sharp shapes. In the Sahara, there are rock carvings that are 6,000 years old. Over time, new religions like Christianity and Islam also changed how art was made. This helped create new styles in East and North Africa.

Many different styles exist depending on where the art comes from.

In West Africa, sculpture is very common near the Niger and Congo rivers. The Mande-speaking peoples make wood pieces with flat surfaces and cylinder limbs. In Central Africa, many faces have a heart shape with dot patterns. Masks are very important for rituals and ceremonies in many cultures.

These masks are often highly stylized rather than looking exactly like a person. They might represent a dancer, a chief, or even a spirit. The human figure is a very common subject in most African art.

African art has had a big impact on the rest of the world.

In the early 1900s, European artists were inspired by African sculpture. They liked the way African art used abstract shapes instead of being realistic. This helped start a new movement in European modern art. Today, scholars also study the art of the African diaspora. This includes art from Brazil, the Caribbean, and the United States. By looking at all these pieces, we learn more about the world's beauty.
