Ensis

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ensis are medium-sized clams that live in saltwater.

These animals belong to a group called bivalves. Bivalves are creatures that have two shells. These clams are often called razor clams. They are part of the Pharidae family. People find them very interesting to study. They live in the clean sand of beaches.

These clams have a very special shape. Their shells are long and narrow. The sides of the shells run parallel. This looks like an old-fashioned straight razor. It also looks like a closed pocket knife. Because of this, people call them jackknives. The shells are quite fragile. They can break if you dig too hard.

Watching these clams work is quite a sight. They live on beaches where the tide goes out. In Scotland, people call them spoots. This name comes from how they move. They spout water while they burrow into sand. You can see this at low tide. They are able to dig very rapidly.

There are many different kinds of Ensis. Scientists recognize thirteen different species today. One is Ensis directus from 1843. This is the Atlantic jackknife clam. Another is Ensis ensis from 1758. There is also Ensis californicus from 1899. Ensis siliqua is a pod razor from 1758. Many others were named in the 1800s.

Some people use a trick to find them. They look for keyhole-shaped breathing holes. These holes are in the sand. A person can pour salt on the holes. The salt makes the clam want to escape. The clam moves up out of its hole. Then a person can grab the shell. They pull the clam from the ground.
